Understanding the CSS Marking Scheme

The Central Superior Services (CSS) examination is Pakistan's premier competitive exam for recruiting officers into federal government services. The written portion of the CSS exam carries a total of 1200 marks, divided equally between 6 compulsory papers and 6 optional papers.

Each paper is worth 100 marks. To pass the CSS written exam, candidates must meet three criteria:

  • Score at least 40% (40 marks) in each compulsory paper
  • Score at least 33% (33 marks) in each optional paper
  • Achieve a satisfactory overall aggregate (generally around 480/1200 or above)

Failing even a single paper means failing the entire CSS written examination, regardless of your total score. This is why tracking each paper individually is critical.
